A Day in the Life of a Nursery Kitchen

The day starts with emptying the dishwasher, checking and recording the fridge temperatures and preparing breakfast.

Children start arriving at nursery at 7.30 am and by 8.00 am there are lots of hungry tummys to fill. We offer a choice of cereals with toast and fruit.

After breakfast there is washing up and tidying away to do.

We have our lunch and tea delivered to enable us to more easily cater for all the different dietary requirements. When the food arrives the temperature of the cold food is checked and recorded and everything is safely stored away until it’s needed.

At the beginning of the week a big supermarket delivery arrives with all our fresh food, cooking ingredients and other consumables. These are tidied away and our lovely kitchen assistant prepares snacks to be ready at about 10.15 am.

More washing up, and it’s time to get the lunch trolley ready.

At 12.00 it’s gloves and aprons on; check and record hot lunch temperatures in time for service, checking all the different allergies and dietary needs. Lunchtime takes about 40 minutes and there’s lots of sticky fingers to wipe and faces to clean.

More washing up and loading the dishwasher; cleaning the sides and on with the washing machine.

It’s time to prepare the snack for the afternoon; a selection of fresh fruit and something starchy like toast, breadsticks or cheese and crackers.

More washing up, the dishwasher is emptied and the tea trolley is loaded, ready for 4.30 pm.

After tea it’s clean hands and faces; it will soon be time for mummy and daddy. Meanwhile, its more washing up in the kitchen and clean and tidy everything ready for another day.

Alongside this busy day in the kitchen, there is baby weaning and bottles to prepare; as well as the monthly jobs of cleaning the fridge, dishwasher and checking the temperature probe is correctly calibrated.

And then there are the days when the children do some cooking too!

This week Preschool made pizza!
